Mylicon/EN and Domenico Sciajno - HBS PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 31 October 2005
This month we show you "HBS (Human Body System)" a new project born from the meeting between Mylicon/EN and Domenico Sciajno, in three versions: "HBS" 10 min. version, "HBS (3 min. excerpt)" and one special track "HBS (The Way We Work)".
The fundamental idea of the project is to integrate two lines of research and two paths which up till now have been very different.
Visually, the  renewed use of analogical sources and the peculiarity of the Mylicon/EN duo’s performance can be confronted with the possibilities of digital processing. Thanks to the apparent complexity of a projection of multipleimages, the images are enlarged, contracted or broken up in a game of relationships and the to and fro between two different screens and two different conceptions which, in turn, create a symbiotic relationship between the produced sound and its spatial placement.
Sample Image HBS (Human Body System) is a mutisensorial audio visual live set. It comes out from the comparison/clash between a concrete definition of sound and image, as result of a performative action, and its expression in the specific digital universe. The project consists in a multiple projection with two separated video channels. Technically it is a performance with wide margins of improvisation. It experiments various interaction levels: images and sound interact in a physical and mechanical dimension (essentially it concerns the way of producing the images themselves and the degree of improvisation) and on a level strictly linked to the programming process and to the application of filters and digital parameters of interference. The flow of images is created and elaborated in realtime during the performance itself by using objects and simple mechanical instruments. Then it is re-elaborated by a laptop which creates a new and different connection with the sound.
The multiple projection allows to enjoy the fusion and the clash of the various components of the projects.
A real image, generated by the “pure” human action, is projected onto the first screen.
Onto the second screen the projected image, with the same origin, is processed according to the sound frequencies.
The used images are taken from an iconographical repertory of a series of classroom films of american production, distributed at the beginning of the 80s on VHS in order to spread information on the working of the human body.
Keeping apart from the easy irony on the exacts sciences of the cathode “tube”, strong suggestions remain: the mechanisms which rule the perception of sounds and images, the spreading and the refraction of light on various surfaces, the organs of the human body themselves and their graphic stylization.
In the live set, the flow of “information” given by television becomes pixel: a game of shapes and lights. Drifting images.
Each single pixel is handled, refracted, splitted, expanded, acquired again. And returns on the screen at the end of the game.
The audio elaboration flows continously from the desire to catch the sound of the objects and the desire to ignore them, let them disappearing or mixing themselves up in a sound flow always in equilibrium with its double (the image), between syncrony and asyncrony.
The neverending rubbing between sound and image determines rythm, shades of colours and a sound sliding on image, just worried about the returning of a “physical deepness” through the sound spazialization. It creates an open game among the elements of the performance.
The specific work done on the sounds follows somehow the process regarding the images. A set of sounds derived from the documentaries is processed and organized by Daniela Cattivelli. Her two channels output reaches Sciajno’s laptop where additional sonic layers and a further processing is applied in real time to them. At this point the audio material is spreaded over four separate channel through a complex real time spatialization system. The multi-dimensional property of the sounds can in this way reflect and even extend the double streams of images.
