![]() SONAR 07. 14th, 15th and 16 June. Barcelona Music for all tastes with the festival's new specialist bills. A heavy list of showcases lengthens the range on offer at Sonar 2007. A vast number of labels, styles and nationalities once again take centre stage in these specialist spaces which discover new talents each year.
Nobody doubts that an English label on electronica has always been a very good reference. So it is not surprising that there are plenty of British-based labels and platforms on the list of showcases at Sonar 2007. These spaces will be an accurate reflection of the decentralisation of the English scene, and of the proliferation of creative hubs outside London. From Manchester we have Modern Love & Evnts with Miles, Claro Intelecto and Andy Stott, who will take care of underlining the letter D in IDM. Their music is always close to the dance floor and right to the point, and is the most danceable side of minimalist electronica. The sounds of Birmingham and Newcastle will come from Capsule & No-Fi. This second out of London showcase, loaded with experiments and sonic hallucinations, will include as special guests Black Galaxy (headed by Nicholas Bullen, ex-member of Napalm Death and Scorn), Burning Star Core and Jazzfinger. And - from London - Accidental. Matthew Herbert's label will be presenting work by its latest three signings - Setsubun Bean Unit, Mica & the Cluster and The Invisible. Three names which promise as much as past discoveries by “doctor Rockit”. Shaping up to be just as interesting are the shows by the artists on Lo Recordings, another London label which has thrown away the rule book and has an incredible variety of styles as its calling card. The disco nostalgia of Black Devil Disco Club, the acid and ultra muscular electro of Cursor Miner and the imaginative analogue landscapes of Milky Globe will be a sample of the London label's very interesting catalogue..... But now let's take a look at the other side of the Channel, at the various showcases coming from continental Europe. Germany will come to the festival with two very different approaches. MINUS, the label headed by Richie Hawtin, will show us the music of JPLS and Tractile, two of its most recent and explosive signings. And we move from emphatic minimalism to the deep sounds of Innervisions, the sub-label of Sonar Kollktiv which specialises in the hottest types of techno and deep house. This second German showcase will include Dixon, Château Flight and Âme. France, another undoubted major player in electronic music, will also be present at the festival. This year it gives us the showcase from OnAndOn Records & French Music Export Office. This includes the jazzed-up hip-hop of Hocus Pocus and the eight-handed turntablism of C2C. All the diversity and why not, the heat of the Finnish scene will also have a special place in the Hot as HEL showcase. The reinvention of the Motown style by Nicole Willis & The Soulsavers, the electro vibrations of The Executives, the disco-kitsch sound of Accu and the imaginative compositions of the techno singer-songwriter Tuomas Toivonen will be a good sample of the new Finland-Touch. From the Netherlands, Rush Hour Records presents Beat Dimensions, with Hearin’ Aid and Jay Scarlett & Cinnaman: more hip-hop and more afro roots sounds. And closer to home, Station 55, the new Barcelona label created by Cristian Vogel. Its showcase will include Night of the Brain, Joe Robinson and Burbuja, three apparently drastically different styles that can only be combined in Vogel's brilliant mind. And as is the case every year, there will be master classes from Red Bull Music Academy Radio, which this year brings us Spacek & Benji B Soundsystem and As One. more info:
