Our first free releases for 2007 are two video excerpts from the DVD compilation muX by c.h.i.a.k.i. (chiaki watanabe), a media artist based in New York. With minimalist and organic aesthetics, her works take on multiple forms such as video, motion graphics, installation and live video performance.
Chiaki approaches image and sound as one entity, two media in one. She explores the communicational, the affective, the sensory aspects of audiovisual media. Her fascination lies in integrating the media into various fields such as performance media, architecture, neuroscience, psychology and beyond. Her work investigates relationships between synaesthetics and kineasthetics created through the interaction of kinetic abstract images and related expressions. Her work has been presented internationally in various venues ranging from media art and video festivals such as the New York Video Festival, Microcinema International, European Media Art Festival (DE), Viper New Media Festival (CH) to art institutions including Museum of Modern Art (US), Institute of Contemporary Arts (UK), Austin Museum of Digital Art, and Kunsthall (NO).
muX muX is a DVD collection of 6 selected experimental abstract visual music works created by c.h.i.a.k.i.(2002-2006). The title of this compilation is derived from the digital processing term "multiplexing": fusing audio and visual data into one. Her live visual works are collaborations with various NY based and international sound artists, ranging from experimental, electronica to avant-classical. Working with color, form and geometry, she experiments in visual music: the visual representation of experimental music through uniquely abstract and minimalist aesthetics.
